<p>It&#8217;s a fact. Extreme anger shuts down higher brain functions, such as the neocortex, which is what you&#8217;ve heard of as the &#8220;right brain&#8221; and the &#8220;left brain.&#8221; That&#8217;s the <b>thinking part of your brain</b>, and when the fight-or-flight (feeling) part of your brain gets overactive, the lights go out in the thinking part.</p>
<p>This is why you can be a pretty smart person, get extremely angry, and do some very not-smart things. Think about it&#8230;when you&#8217;re really angry, are you at your best? Of course not. <b>Here&#8217;s how it works:</b></p>

<li>You feel threatened, and that&#8217;s why you&#8217;re angry.</li>
<p>
<li>When you feel threatened, the primitive (reptilian) part of your brain literally takes over, and pushes the other brain functions aside so it can take care of business.</li>

<li>The problem is, this usually happens with the <b>people you love the most</b>&#8211;that&#8217;s where your heart is open, so that&#8217;s where you&#8217;re the most vulnerable and easily threatened.</li>

<li>So when those higher brain functions shut down, you forget how much you love this person you&#8217;re mad at, and you start feeling like they&#8217;re your worst enemy.</li>

<li>You know how it goes from there. The explosion occurs, you feel the release, <b>you eventually calm down and think</b>, &#8220;Oh no, what have I done?&#8221; You&#8217;re feeling regret because you have calmed down enough for your higher brain functions to kick in and you know you don&#8217;t really want to hurt your loved ones.</li>

<p>Here are some things to consider when it comes to anger and humor:</p>

<li>Anger often results from taking things way too seriously, especially yourself.</li>
<p>
<li>Just by making up your mind to <b>look for the humor</b> in a situation, you have taken a few steps away from your anger.</li>
<p>
<li>Your joy and your sense of humor are closer to who you really are than your anger is&#8211;so when you move from anger towards a smile, you&#8217;re moving <b>closer to your good heart and soul</b>.</li>

<li>It takes a stronger, smarter person to laugh at themselves, and find the absurdity in some of their situations.</li>

<li>When you love someone, you become vulnerable to them. You can be more hurt by someone you love than anyone else.</li>

<li>Because of that vulnerability, you are (maybe unconsciously) more afraid, anxious and/or sensitive in those relationships.</li>

<li>Wherever you are the most anxious and sensitive, that&#8217;s where you&#8217;re the most likely to get angry. This is why domestic violence calls are the most dangerous calls a police officer can make.</li>
